All those looking to switch from smoking, Vaping is the right choice for you. Vapers are ready to build their own coils with the best vaping products. Tim Reichwein wanted to wean himself off regular cigarette smoking and has turned to vape. He is trying to kick cigarettes and is more into vaping. Rim Martin from Lewisburg has been vaping since high school and thinks it is really cool. He says it is much cheaper than smoking cigarettes and costs around $20 a week while a pack of cigarettes every 2 days costs as much.
What is Vaping?
Vaping is the act of taking in aerosols by inhalation and exhalation; the vapors are produced by an e-cigarette or similar device. Most vapers settle for e-liquids while some opt for dry herbs and concentrates. According to studies, vaping is a $3.5 billion business which has grown exponentially in the past few years. It is estimated to have grown 900 percent since 2011, mostly due to using by youngsters.
Why Vaping increased by 900%
According to their latest fact sheet, the Surgeon General reports that vaping is common and one in every 5 school-going child vapes. They also state that one in 20 middle-school aged children have used an e-cig. Dr. Jaya Prakash Sugunaraj, of Geisinger Medical Center, says the number is worrisome.
“The data is clear,” he said. “E-cigarettes are just as unhealthy as regular cigarette smoking. And Juuling, a device that is popular with high-school age kids, is very powerful. One pod of juice smoked is equal to about a pack of cigarettes, and kids don’t realize this.”
Dr.Sugunaraj says that young people get addicted to vaping since it is not smoking and the stigma attached to smoking is missing since there is no tobacco smell. It is also marketed such as an alternative to smoking and looks healthier. Besides, great flavors like watermelon, cherry apple etc are appealing to youth. Big vaping players say they do not target young people.
According to Marcus O’Brien, manager, Vapor Worx, he says they are strictly against marketing to young people but admits he vapes because it is cool. He says most kids buy vapes at various gas stations and they have nothing to do with it.
“We don’t endorse that by any means. Nicotine is addictive, in regular or e-cigarettes, either way. If someone comes in and they look young, we’ll card them. It’s our rule of thumb here.” is how he puts it.
O’Brien sells Juuling pods and also mentions he never sells Juuling pods to kids. He says even 18 is too young to smoke or vape and many who turn 18 just show up to vape and look cool. One of the biggest players in the market, Juul Labs, which is San Francisco based, responded to questions asked.
They state that “We are committed to preventing youth access of Juul products, and no young person or non-nicotine user should ever try Juul,” according to company spokesman Ted Kwong. “We cannot fulfill our mission to provide the world’s one billion adult smokers with a true alternative to combustible cigarettes if youth use continues unabated. That is why we have taken the most dramatic and aggressive steps of any other manufacturer in the industry to prevent underage use with the Juul Labs Action Plan. We suspended the distribution of certain flavored Juul pods to traditional retail stores as of November 17, 2018,”
Vaping is an Old Technology
Actually, vaping is considered old technology and took hold in 1963, but it was late to catch on. It was introduced only in 2003 in the United States. However, by 2013, the devices had sales which hit $1.7 billion in the U.S. alone. Now they have achieved a target of $3 billion. Since 2014 they are one of the most commonly used tobacco products among U.S. youths.
To attract young users, e-cigarettes are available in a variety of flavors like menthol, alcohol, fruit, chocolate or other sweets. It is this which attracts young people to take to vaping. E-cigarettes contain nicotine and they hamper brain development. Besides, an e-cigarette can also cause other mishaps like explosion and fire. Toxins inhaled through e-cigarettes are below threshold levels for exposure making them safer than smoking. Since vaping is relatively new, long term hazards on health are yet to be studied.
Another popular misconception among people is that vaping is a good way to quit smoking, but statistics prove otherwise. Cigarettes of all types contain nicotine and it is not a good way to quit smoking. There are also many cancer-causing chemicals in e-juices which are harmful to health. Unless a check is put on vaping, it could cause long term damage.
